It is often seen that candidates upon receiving a call letter rush to the nearest coaching centre to do a crash course or pickup any book on SSB coaching and try to mug up ideas and views given in them. This will lead to definite failure as assessors are experts in discriminating between candidates who are genuinely good and those who are superficial. Unlike other organizations, the selection process in the armed forces is very elaborate and is done over five days. Three different assessors namely the Interviewing Officer, Group Testing Officer and the Psychologist look at the same candidate from three different perspectives and arrive at their respective decision.Thereafter, on the last day in the board conference, they all sit together and discuss each case to arrive at the final decision.

We as assessors have often heard candidates asking us at the end of all the tests as to what is it that we see in them to select. It is unfortunate that they do not even know what are they tested for. Incidentally, all the three assessors namely the Interviewing Officer, Psychologist and the Group Testing Officer measure the same 15 attributes called the Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) using their respective tools / techniques.
